SAINT-PIERRE DE FIRMINY
One of Le Corbusier’s last works, the church in Firminy was only finished this year, in 2006, from the architect’s sketches. No other major design by a famous architect has ever been completed decades after its commission. The geometry is the result of a metamorphosis of a square base containing functional rooms with a projected circle enclosing a sanctuary in a complex hyperboloid shape above. It has to be experienced, not described.
